Nepal's Electoral Scene Witnesses Major Alliance Forged By TV Host and Former Musician Mayor
In a significant development ahead of the upcoming national polls, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the wake of widespread and deadly young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Tackle Youth Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This promise follows the violent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which led to significant casualties.
"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.
The late summer uprising was sparked by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Terms of the Fresh Electoral Partnership
According to the formal pact, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the country's older political class. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.
Broader Government Consultations Taking Place
In a related event, the current interim prime minister recently held meetings with several major political leaders. These talks included former prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the protests.
After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a collective responsibility. The message affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and open atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
