This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.

We present a challenge for partners in committed relationships who are fans of the horror genre: Settle in with your loved one and view Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its online premiere via Hulu. Outwardly, it may seem like typical body horror, but inside Together exists a deep contemplation about the ways we decide to love one another.

A Debut Feature Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together marks the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for ten years. Having wed in actuality in 2017, the two stars infuse a particular energy to their roles, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The narrative commences when Millie and Tim transition from the urban environment to the rural area for professional reasons. A commonly used plot device, sure, but that’s primarily where the conventions end. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim tumble into an underground cave. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence takes hold of the duo. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a slow burn of scares, interspersing moments of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but never too gross) body horror, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes during something horrific). Shanks skillfully blends these components seamlessly and wraps them up in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is suffering due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and removed from his network of friends. He fears the notion of totally forfeiting his sense of self in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision is that he never makes one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

Both characters face the type of challenges that arise in most partnerships over a long period. At their core, they have affection for each other. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to another person, the metaphor avoids being hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other symbiotically.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a strong argument for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could function as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your partner and say, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform now.
